Official Title:

Comparing the Treatment Outcome of Standard Systemic Therapy Only versus Standard Systemic Therapy in Combination with Either Surgery or Radiation Therapy, for Patients with Advanced Prostate Cancer

Study Purpose:

To compare the effects, good and/or bad, of adding prostate removal surgery or radiation therapy to standard therapy which is used to treat prostate cancer.


  • Standard Therapy (Androgen Deprivation Therapy with or without Chemotherapy)
  • Surgery
  • Radiation Therapy
  • Quality of Life Questionnaires
  • Group 1:  Standard Therapy
  • Group 2:  Standard Therapy + Surgery or Radiation Therapy

Key Participation Requirements:




19 years and older


Adenocarcinoma of the prostate


Patients must have an intact prostate.

No prior therapy for prostate cancer is allowed.

Patients must have cancer that has spread confirmed on a bone scan and CT or MRI.

Patients who have cancer that has spread to the brain are not eligible.

Patients may have received no more than 28 weeks of prior standard systemic therapy.

Patients must not have progressed while on standard systemic therapy.

Patients must sign an approved informed consent and authorization permitting release of personal health information.
